| Welcome to UBER Calgary | This video will walk you through the basic requirements and steps on how to become an UBER driver in the city of Calgary. We get it. This process can be lengthy and confusing. If at any time you are uncertain of your next steps, please come visit us at the Calgary Greenlight Hub to speak to an expert.
| * | Our experience at the HUB was excellent.
Before we begin, lets go through driver and vehicle eligibility. All drivers must be 21 years or older and hold a valid class 1, 2 or 4 driver's license. All vehicles must be 10 years or newer and have 4 doors. The vehicle cannot be salvaged or rebuilt. If you and your vehicle meet these basic requirements you can begin to create your UBER driver account.
| Create a Driver Account | There are two ways to create your account. First you could download the UBER driver APP on your or Android or Apple device or can create an account at the link below:

After creating your account, you will be asked to take photos of your basic documents. You will need to upload your driver's license, personal vehicle insurance and proof of work eligibility.
All UBER drivers are required to hold a valid driver's license. You will need an Alberta Class 1, 2, or 4 license. This license is an advanced license to Class 5.
To get a class 4 license you will need to complete a knowledge test, medical exam and a road test. Visit the link below for additional information on the Class 4 licensing process
| Personal Vehicle Insurance | The Alberta Government has approved an insurance policy from INTACT Insurance designed specifically for ridesharing drivers. All drivers are still required to maintain a personal insurance policy.
We recommend you speak with your provider to discuss ridesharing.
For rideshare friendly insurance providers please visit the link below:
Your name must be visible on the insurance slip. If you're the secondary driver, you must show proof of the policy document with your name on it.
| Proof of Work Eligibility | A proof of work eligibility can be any current photo of your Passport, Birth Certificate, Permanent Residency Card, Citizenship Card or Work Permit to verify that you can legally work as an independent contractor in Canada.
After creating your account, you will need to provide UBER a copy of your personal 3 year driving abstract. You can get this at any Alberta Registry.
| * | Search AlbertaRegistry.com
Registries will charge a fee for the abstract and it can vary starting at 25.00. Registries should be able to issue this immediately.
All driver abstracts must qualify based on a set of guidelines:
No Major Infractions (4 or more demerits)
No more than 2 minor infractions (3 or less demerits)
The abstract must be submitted within 30 days of it being issued. You can eMail a copy of your abstract to the link below:
If you're not sure that your abstract qualifies, please visit the Greenlight Hub and an expert will be more than willing to assist.
| After you've provided UBER with your abstract you can obtain your vehicle registration. Drivers are required to carry a Class 1-55 vehicle registration. All Registries in Alberta should be equipped to issue this type of registration. There is a fee to make this switch and fees could vary. Registries should be able to issue this immediately.
Upon switching your registration the registry will also provide you an updated license plate to match your registration.
| Regulations require all vehicles to undergo an Enhanced Livery Vehicle Inspection Check also known as an E.L.V.I.S. inspection. Regardless of the year of the vehicle all vehicles must undergo this inspection. You will need to have a licensed E.L.V.I.S. mechanic inspect your car and complete an inspection form to make sure it meets safety standards. The mechanic will have the E.L.V.I.S. inspection form at their shop. You will need to upload this form as proof of your inspection, so hold on to it. There's a fee to complete an inspection and the costs may vary. Visit the link at the bottom of the screen to find the location nearest you.
| Good news, we're almost done | Next step is to apply for your Transportation Network License also known as a TNDL license at the Livery Transport Services Office. Bring your Driver's License, Proof of Work Eligibility, Class 1-55 Vehicle Registration, Personal Vehicle Insurance and completed E.L.V.I.S. Vehicle Inspection and head to the Calgary Livery Transport Services Office.
They will take your documents and complete a background screening. After your background screen is complete the Livery office will issue your TNDL license. This is for your own records. The Calgary Livery Transport Services will eMail a copy of this letter directly to UBER.
This process can take up to a few weeks. The staff will be able to provide you a better estimated turnaround time. Once UBER receives a copy of your TNDL License, UBER will activate your account. Be sure to check your eMail.
Before you take your first trip as a licensed UBER driver be sure to apply your Red TNC sticker. Your vehicle will need to have the official TNC sticker displayed at all times. The sticker is free and can be picked up at the Calgary Greenlight Hub. Once you receive your sticker, place it on the rear windshield in the lower left corner.
